The Transfiguration of the Commonplace
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (March, 1983)
Average review score:

Transfiguration of aesthetics!!
The best attempt yet at a definitional theory of art.One of the best philosophical works of the latter 20th century. Ranks alongside Goodman's 'Fact, Fiction and Forecast'. Of interest not merely to philosophers of aesthetics but also to anyone interested in problems of representation and ontology. A must for any serious student of the arts.
Study of AestheticsFor any scholar of aesthetics or modern art theory this book isa must. It only falls short in establishing a general theory of art that is applicable to all art forms (such as architecture and music), which Danto claims to be doing (but who has not?). Still, his insight remains crucial to understanding art forms and their meaning in the 20th century.

View from Ground Level
Published in Paperback by Bartlett Publishing (January, 1996)
Average review score:

Entertaining and thought provoking. In reading View From The Ground Level, I found a lot of quotes that hit home. There is a great mixture of sayings and a lot of thought behind them which makes this such a unique and interesting book. The author, through his book, seems to tell a lot about himself and others from these sayings. It is a great book to keep around the home, work, and on the road. It is an excellent book to give as a gift. I highly recommend it and wish the author good luck for a job well done.
Unique perspectives from a warm-hearted humorist/philosopherJohn offers fresh observations on life and living. His perspectives are often witty and humorous, but often are serious and contemplative. He has put a lot of thought into his material. The book is a collection of "thoughts for the day" and can be read easily and leisurely. I would highly recommend the journey.
A WONDERFUL BOOKTHE VIEW FROM GROUND LEVEL is a wonderful book that I would recommend highly to anyone who likes to have food for thought. The author has thought things through very well, and we are the beneficiaries of that process.

The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture and Its Makers Through 1850
Published in Hardcover by National Book Network (01 October, 1988)
Average review score:

Tennessee FurnitureThis is a splendid book, originally published by the Tennessee Historical Society, and sold at the Tennessee State Museum. Photographs and descriptions are excellent, as are the examples. The book is not engaged in "price guessing" and the like. Rather, it is designed for the person who is familiar with the construction of period furniture and who is cognizant of the terminology. It is highly recommended for collectors, dealers and anyone else interested in ways and furnishings of the past.

Aspects of Symmetry : Selected Erice Lectures
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (May, 1988)
Average review score:

A wonderful book to supplement one's QFT knowledgeThis 400-page book contains eight lectures of varying length (some are quite long). The first two are not very useful, but the remainder of the book is wonderful. It covers topics like scale invariance, Callan-Symanzik (RG) equations, renormalization theory (Hepp's theorem), spontaneously broken symmetries, classical and quantum solitons, instantons (in QM and in gauge theories), and 1/N expansion. These are all useful topics and must be understood by those in the field, and yet not all of them are covered by ordinary quantum field theory books like Peskin & Schroeder. The style is very friendly and readable and includes a lot of endnotes, appendices, and references. This book does not "read" like Peskin/Schroeder or Weinberg or Itzykson/Zuber; those books don't read. This one does. The equations are easy to follow and this book showcases the strength of Coleman's pedagogical style. In fact I can vouch that the tone and content of these lectures serves as a close substitue for Coleman's lectures themselves. The topics were all basically developed in the 1970s, and were themselves all quite hot research areas before supersymmetry and string theory revolutionized high-energy physics. However, the majority of this book is not an anachronism -- the renormalization group, spontaneously broken symmetries, solitons, instantons, and 1/N expansion all pervade modern physics.
A ClassicColeman is one of the best field theorists and a great lecturer. His style in both research and lectures can be summarized as "turning obvious into trivial". Every topic is presented in the simplest possible way without loss of deep insights, which makes the book extremely comprehensible. The chapter on instantons is absolutely classic.
unconventional QFT bookMany physicists say that Coleman is one of the great field theoriest in time. This is the collection of what he had lectured. Each chapter has own its importance. The advantage of the book is that he avoided the mathematical complication to explain the real physics. It is very unique feature in the QFT books. So you can get the concept of field theory without mathematical jargon which most students hate.

Bessie Coleman: First Black Woman Pilot (African-American Biographies)
Published in Library Binding by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (October, 2001)
Average review score:

A remarkable womanBessie Coleman was a truly remarkable woman. During the 1920s, not many women or black Americans were drawn to flying. Bessy, a black American woman, had to fight many prejudices to realize her dream. Plantz tells Bessie's story from birth to her tragic and suspicious death in a plane crash as a compelling narative. Bessie tackled many challenges in her short life and can be considered a role model, if not hero, for black Americans and all women. This is a good read for 10-year-olds to adult.
Bessie Coleman: First Black Woman PilotThis is a wonderfully rich and enjoyable biography on a very important woman in history. Not only does the author make Bessie's amazing story come to life, but it is written in an enjoyable stye that helps you absorb the facts and significants of her life & times. I'd highly recomend this to anyone intersted in flight, black history, or women's rights.

A delight from start to finishThis book was given to me by a friend, probably because I was in the independent grocery business for many years, many of them lean ones.
I stayed up all night reading Better to Dwell because of its honesty and realism.
Books like this one do not often come along.

Brave Bessie: Flying Free
Published in Hardcover by Hendrick-Long Publishing (July, 1995)
Average review score:

A vivid account of a remarkable woman.Bessie Coleman's determined spirit and love of flying comes across vividly in this biography of a young black woman living in a time when surmounting obstacles were a way of life. From the moment young Bessie looks up from the cotton fields to see a plane soaring overhead, she knows she wants to fly. She accomplishes her goal and not only becomes the first black aviatrix, but a popular areobatic pilot as well. Lillian Fisher writes a well researched, refreshing story that reveals the courage and stamina of a remarkable woman. A must read for children and adults alike.
This is a well written book about an amazing woman. This inspiring story is not to be missed! Bessie Coleman was an exceptional woman. The author, Lillian Fisher has done her justice in this lovely little biography. The information is very thoroughly researched and presented in a clean, engaging manner. Especially helpful for students is the glossary and fine index. The period photographs and other illustrations interspersed throughout the text enhance the story. What a fine way to become acquainted with Brave Bessie!

Brief Encounters
Published in Paperback by Doubleday (January, 1980)
Average review score:

Brief encounters - an excellent perspectiveAn excellent book which takes a positive & optimistic view of relationships that may not last forever. Designed for mature and experienced readers, with experience being IN a relationship, but forgetting how to START a relationship. First 1/3 of book helps the reader accept the OK-ness of the end of a major intimate relationship. The second 1/3 helps the reader identify him/her self as an individual, now able to pursue any dreams desired. The 3rd 1/3 of the book helps the reader start to confidently re-enter the outside world, with their now-clarified self-concept, in search of new (more compatible) friendships, acquaintances, and maybe loves.
Excellent BookThis book explains short term relationships between friends, family, lovers, and strangers. It explains why we need short term relationships and how to keep long term relationships by viewing them as a daily decision for a short term relationship. It is not about lack of commitment, lack of love, lack of anything. It is about healthy relationships

City of Angels
Published in Paperback by Applause Books (February, 1991)
Average review score:

One of the funniest musicals on Broadway in years! When City of Angels premiered on Broadway in 1989, it ran for fewer than 1000 performances. When you read this libretto, which you absolutely must do if you like musical theatre at all, you'll wonder why it isn't running today. The book is full of wit, and is incredibly funny and biting as it satirizes Hollywood movie-making. The stage directions keep you fully abreast of what's going on (even if you've never seen a show), and they allow you to easily keep track of where the action is happening. The only thing missing from this wonderful volume is, of course, the great music that goes with the song. All the more reason to buy the OCR of the show and listen to it at the same time! City of Angels is a great musical, and one you'll enjoy reading (and listening to!) time and time again.
A must for any Musical Theatre fanNot to be confused with the recent Cage/Ryan flick, this book is the libretto of a little-known musical with music by Cy Coleman ("Sweet Charity", "The Life"), book by Larry Gelbart ("A Funny Thing...", "Tootsie"), and lyrics by David Zippel (Disney's "Hercules" and "Mulan"). "City of Angels" won the 1989 Tony Award for Best Musical and is the story of a detective novelist named Stine and the perils he encounters while trying to adapt his novels for the silver screen. In the play, scenes about Stine (in color) are juxtaposed with scenes about his private-eye creation, Stone (in black and white). Besides building some genuine film noir detective-mystery suspense, the musical offers an insightful commentary on how art imitates life, and vice versa. Unfortunately, one misses out on the marvelous jazz-infected music that accompanies the adventures of Stine and Stone if one merely reads the libretto, so grab a copy of one of the cast recordings (Broadway or London) as well!

College Countdown is the book a student reads as a high school freshman and, four years later, tucks the dogeared copy into his/her suitcase as (s)he heads off to college.
The Best college book aroundIt helped me get in the Colorado School of Mines among others. It is Practical, Useful, and it is Short.
I think philosophers haven't still quite understood Danto completely. The main source of misunderstanding is that people seem to think that Danto supports the institutional theory of art, which he doesn't. This will become very apparent after reading this book. He barely mentions the word artworld in this book.
This book is a classic. It's fun to read and Danto's knowledge of the history of art is huge. I would like to translate this book into Finnish but unfortunately the title cannot be traslated fluently.
